How to Stay Safe In a New Home

You’ve moved into a brand new home. Congrats! With the excitement of decorating and starting a new chapter, it’s easy to forget the most important step to getting settled: keeping your home secure. While home security should be our top priority, it’s easy to let our excitement override our sense of security. For that reason, we have created a safety checklist to ensure security is set in place of your new home before the interior design begins.

Here are 5 tips to staying safe in your new home:

  1. Change the Locks

  2. Secure Your Wi-Fi

  3. Check Your Smoke Alarms

  4. Meet Your Neighbors

  5. Install Home Security Cameras and Alarms

Change the Locks

Unless you’ve invested in brand new home construction, you never know who has a spare key to your house. Home sellers may have forgotten about friends and relatives they trusted with a key, so it’s important to update your locks so you know exactly who has access to your property. Changing your locks will make any key to the previous lock completely useless, so nobody (besides yourself) successfully walks in. This can be done on your own, or you can hire a professional in the area.

Secure Your Wi-Fi

In today's world, everything is connected through internet technology, including laptops and phones, air conditioning, and security systems. If your Wi-Fi network is used across your home security systems, you are at risk of being hacked by cybercriminals. To help minimize that risk, be sure to change the SSID of your home’s network. Then, create a strong password, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN), and make sure you have protection from malware by using a trusted firewall.

Check Your Smoke Alarms

Smoke detectors, fire alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors (CO) are the most important alarm systems when it comes to the safety of both your property and your health. They alert you of dangerous smoke and CO to give you enough evacuation time. If these alarms are not working, it could lead to serious damage. Test your alarms to confirm they are working properly as soon as you move into your new home, then continue to check them periodically. It only takes a couple of minutes!

Meet Your Neighbors

Probably the most important tip is to get to know your neighborhood. This is where you’ll be spending most of your time, so you need to scope out the area and get a vibe of your new friends next door. Getting to know the neighborhood and learning everyone’s individual stories will help you to feel comfortable with your community. Befriending your neighbors could also mean getting a second eye on your home incase of an emergency while you’re away.

Install Home Security Cameras and Alarms

According to a study from 2018, burglars are now targeting valuable items either left on your porch or easily seen through windows. By installing security cameras onto your residential space, you’re adding an extra layer of security away from home among other benefits. Home security protects you and your property from burglary, environmental disasters, and other potential threats. Cameras provide evidence of theft should a porch pirate decide to steal your packages, and may help in recovery of those items.
